Gumtree Seller Playbook: Module 4

Most sellers focus on the big stuff: the title, the description and the photos. But the real secret sauce? The small fields most people skip. When you fill in every field (price, category, condition, location, delivery), Gumtree does some clever stuff behind the scenes. It’s called structured data.

This structured data is also known as:

  1. Schema markup.

  2. Structured product info.

  3. Machine-readable metadata.

Simple meaning: Google and AI understand your listing perfectly. And when the internet understands your listing, good things happen.

Why this matters: When someone asks their phone or an AI tool, “Where can I buy a used Samsung TV near me?”, “Find a cheap couch in Cape Town,” or “Second-hand iPhones in Pretoria,” your listing now has a much better chance of showing up.

That means: More visibility → more views → more messages → more sales. 💸 All because you filled in a few extra fields.

Why completing every field helps you sell faster

1. Better search ranking

Listings with complete info show up more often and more accurately on Gumtree and on Google. If the system understands your item, it knows who to show it to.

2. Better AEO (Ad Engine Optimisation)

Gumtree’s systems prefer listings with full, structured data. Why? Because they’re easier to:
• Categorise.
• Recommend.
• Match with serious buyers.

3. Fewer buyer questions

No more “Price?”, “Where are you based?”, “What condition is it in?” You save time. Buyers move faster. Everyone’s happy.

4. Higher trust

A fully filled-in listing looks legit. Buyers naturally trust sellers who are clear, upfront and detailed. Remember, trust sells.

The 5 most important fields to fill in:

1. Price (never leave it blank): No price = no clicks. Always add a number, even if you’re flexible. Buyers filter by price so if you skip this field, your item disappears from their search. Example: R2 200 (Negotiable)

2. Exact category (be specific): Categories help Gumtree understand exactly what you’re selling. The more specific you are, the better your visibility.

Instead of: Electronics. Use: Electronics → TV/Audio → Televisions → LED/LCD → Samsung

Instead of: Furniture . Use: Furniture → Couches & Sofas → 3-Seaters

3. Condition (tell the truth): Choose the option that fits best: • New.
• Used – Excellent.
• Used – Good.
• Used – Fair.

These labels help buyers (and search engines) understand value and quality at a glance.

4. Delivery method (Use “Pay Secure + Collect”): This is a big trust booster. Buyers love safe, cash-free options and sellers get more serious enquiries and fewer no-shows. Gumtree also prefers listings using official payment and delivery options – it’s safer for everyone.

5. Location (City + Suburb): Location is one of the strongest signals in search. Always fill in both the city and the suburb.

Examples: Johannesburg – Sandton, Durban – Durban North, Cape Town – Claremont.

So, when someone searches “near me”, your listing actually shows up.

Bonus fields that give you an extra boost: These aren’t mandatory but they help a lot:

✔ Brand.
✔ Model number.
✔ Size/dimensions.
✔ Colour.
✔ Year purchased.
✔ Warranty (if you have one).

The more you add, the more searchable and trustworthy your listing becomes.

Bad vs good example

❌ Bad listing

• No price
• Category: “Electronics”
• Condition: blank
• Location: “South Africa”
• Delivery: blank

Result:
Low visibility. Low trust. No messages.

✅ Good listing

• Price: R4 000
• Category: Televisions → Samsung
• Condition: Used – Excellent
• Location: Durban – Durban North
• Delivery: Pay Secure + Collect
• Brand, model, size, colour filled in

Result:
Easy to find. Easy to trust. Easy to sell.
