You can still get ALOT of money for your old household appliances just laying around

Like milk or bread, electronics around your home also have an expiration date. Granted, some appliances last much longer than others - though loadshedding also causes havoc with its inner workings.

There are many reasons people replace their old household appliances, either because of a mechanical malfunction, there's something new on the market, or a too-good-to-turn-down deal came up. While new technological innovations are exciting, it also means that our devices become outdated quicker than ever before.

So then, what happens to the old ones? Instead of throwing it away, make some extra cash and sell it on Gumtree - of course! Everything from kettles to toasters and (smart) TVs are some of the most popular items people look for and are considered fast sellers.

Newer items are obviously pricier than their used counterparts, but there are cost benefits to be had from it. Some people might not even need a specific (brand-new) item and sell it for way less than retail - but those are largely uncommon. In addition, you can always use the money from the sale of your second-hand device towards a newer model.

We list a couple of helpful tips when listing your item(s) for sale:
  1. Just because your gadget is not the latest, doesn't mean you need to make the price extremely low. Do some research on Gumtree to find similar models and compare the condition to yours. You never want to be too high or too low compared to the other adverts.
  2. A good benchmark is to price at around 50% of what it costs you in the first place, as long as it is in excellent condition.
  3. Always add a clear, high-quality image of the device from more than one angle. Show the front and the back.
  4. Be as open and honest as possible in the description. If there are any scratches (or the like), write them down amongst the positive points you write in the description to not affect the potential buyer's mind. You want them to know about any issues before they make any effort to come see the product in person.
  5. If possible, include all of the original packaging, as well as any items it came with. For example, if it came with headphones and a charging cable, include those.
Now that you've got the knowledge, it's time to shop! Head to Gumtree.co.za or your Gumtree app (click for Apple & Android), and don't forget to use your location settings to find local service information close to home.
