Kanazawa ice pops - the ice cream suckers that don't melt in the heat

During summer, there's nothing worse than having to eat your ice cream or suckers quickly before it starts to melt, dripping everywhere and even falling off of the cone altogether.

What if there was an ice cream that didn't melt at all, even in the harshest sunlight, and only did so until you started eating? Sounds almost unbelievable, right? Well, in Japan, scientists have managed to make a popsicle that doesn't melt called Kanazawa ice cream - also known as 'not melting popsicles'.

It was first sold in 2017 and uses a polyphenol liquid extracted from strawberries that helps the popsicles keep their shape. This substance apparently makes it harder for the water and oil in the ice cream to separate, allowing the popsicle to retain its shape a lot longer. Scientists also discovered that the substance keeps the ice cream from melting at a whopping 40 degrees Celsius for up to a maximum of three hours.

Eat it the way you like it

Even though most people eat ice cream fairly quickly, the benefits of the Kanazawa one's mean you can take your time enjoying it. Some of the flavours include chocolate, mango and vanilla, and is also available in animal shapes like a bear or even Hello Kitty - which are a treat (no pun intended) for Instagrammers.

Here are some interesting facts about ice cream:

  • The average number of licks to finish a scoop of ice cream is 50.
  • The most popular flavour is vanilla, then chocolate.
  • There is 273 calories in one cup of vanilla ice cream.
  • Iran makes noodle ice cream.
  • July is National Ice Cream Month

Considering South Africa has some pretty hot summer days, the Kanazawa ice cream will definitely be a popular choice for those that enjoy their soft serve.

Unfortunately, the Kanazawa ice cream is not available in South Africa. You'll have to fly all the way to Japan in order to experience it for yourself. Why not make your very own soft serve and cream treats by searching for ice cream makers on Gumtree?
