5 Reasons why limiting your (artificial) sugar intake is good for your health

All the nice things to eat and enjoy is often unhealthy and contain decent amounts of sugar. Cake, Cooldrink, Chocolate - the list can keep going and consuming too much sugar can be detrimental for ones health.

Those are considered artificial sugar products or man-made, if you prefer, but fruits and vegetables also contain some form of natural sugar that is beneficial towards maintaining a healthy lifestyle as it contains all sorts of calcium, fibre, vitamins and minerals that the body needs. You're safe there.

Taking in too much sugar is not good because: the extra insulin in your bloodstream can damage your arteries throughout your body. It causes the walls to become inflamed, leaving it thicker and stiffer than normal, which stresses and damages your heart over longer periods of time. Heart disease, such as heart failure, heart attacks, and strokes, can result from this.

Did you know that each can of your favourite cooldrink contains atleast nine teaspoons of sugar - fruit juices have ten. This is more than the recommended daily limit of six. If you look at some of the statistics in South Africa alone, about 40% of women and 11% of men suffer from obesity in the country. And 25% of teenage girls in rural areas are overweight or obese.

Gumtree lists 5 reasons why artificial sugar is not good for your body:

  • Accelerate weight gain - Many people that have lost weight will tell you that the first thing you need to do is cut out sugar completely. Other than providing an energy source, it has absolutely no weight loss properties.
  • Tooth decay - Remember what the grown-ups said about eating too much sweets because your teeth could get rotten? They weren't lying. The sugary deposits cling onto the teeth after consumption and accelerates the decaying effect. This makes brushing teeth regularly very important.
  • High risk of diabetes - Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. Untreated high blood sugar from diabetes can damage your nerves, eyes, kidneys, and other organs.
  • Negatively affects internal organs - The human body was never designed to incorporate sugary liquids into its daily operation. The sugar gets absorbed into, not only the bloodstream, but also the internals organs like the heart, liver and kidneys.
  • High blood sugar levels - consuming cold beverages on a daily basis will make blood levels spike and lead to other health-related illnesses in future unless the intake is lowered significantly.
