What affects the resale value of your car? A quick guide from Gumtree

Thinking of selling your car? Before you snap pics and upload your ad, let’s talk about what really affects how much moola it’s worth so that you can ask for a realistic price and receive your moola.

While we’d love to tell you that your car’s worth a fortune, the truth is that a few key things can make that number go up or down faster than the petrol price.

Here’s what matters most when buyers start browsing:

1. Mileage - the big one

The more your wheels have turned, the less cash you’ll get. That’s the simple rule of thumb. Low mileage says, “I’ve still got plenty of road trips left in me,” while high mileage says, “I’ve been to places and seen things…” Don’t stress…a well-serviced high miler can still fetch a bozza price if it’s been looked after.

2. Condition - inside and out

A clean, well-kept car always scores a higher price. We’re talking no dents, no funny noises and definitely no mystery smells from last week’s leftover takeaways. Buyers notice everything. Give it a good makeover (wash, polish and vacuum) and if something’s cracked or squeaky, sort it out before you list. Spending a little can pay out a lot.

3. Model year - age ain’t just a number

Newer models mean newer tech, better safety and higher demand. But older cars with solid reputations (think, Toyota Corolla and VW Polo) still fetch a fair price. Check your car’s year and see how it stacks up in the market against the thousands of cars already listen on Gumtree. Obviously, your vehicle licence needs to be up to date.

4. Service History - your car’s report card (at this school, 30% is not a pass mark)

A full, stamped service book is like gold. It tells buyers that your car has been loved, not neglected. Missing records? That can knock a few bucks off. Always keep those receipts and service stamps safe - they add up to trust (and more ka-ching in your wallet!).

5. Demand - what do people want?

Some cars are in demand all the time - Double cabs from the big manufacturers, SUVs, fuel-efficient hatches, luxury cars – that sort of thing. Toyota, VW, BMW, Suzuki, Ford and other big brands are more in demand than cars that don’t sell well new or have reputations for poor reliability and aftersales service. There’s not much you could do if you bought a car that no one has ever heard of before, but you can plan your next Gumtree buy better!

So, what’s next?

Hop onto Gumtree, punch in your car’s details and browse similar listings to get an instant idea of its resale value. Then you can list your car with confidence, knowing exactly what it’s worth and what’s available in the marketplace.
