Volvo took a big step towards electrifying by launching their first ever fully electric car - the XC40 Recharge - and now they've added a brand-new model to the range.
The highly anticipated XC60 T8 Recharge plug-in hybrid has officially touched down on local soil and comes with a starting price of R1.2-million. It serves as the top-specced model in the XC60 range (sitting above the B5 and B6 mild-hybrid variants), with the all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid newcomer in R-Design available in luxury Inscription trim.
The model is powered by a turbo and supercharged 2.0-litre petrol engine that produces 233kW and 400Nm, mated to an eight-speed Geartronic automatic transmission. The ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) works in conjunction with an electric motor that has a 18.8 kWh lithium-ion battery, with additional outputs of 107kW and 309Nm. In terms of performance, the mid-size SUV can do the 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.8 seconds.
It also boasts a pure electric range of up to 81km and a combined fuel consumption of 1.6-litres/100km.

T8 Recharge models come with features like a panoramic sunroof, heated front seats, inductive smartphone charging and 19-inch alloys - the R-Design variant gains sporty model-specific interior and exterior styling cues. Customers can also choose from a range of optional extras like a Harman Kardon Premium Sound system, air suspension and bigger 22-inch wheels.
The T8 is well stocked in the technological department, featuring the latest Android-powered infotainment system, complete with built-in Google apps and services. Drivers can also make use of a number of services available through the Volvo Cars app like allowing owners to remotely precondition the cabin, monitor battery charge and monitor electricity consumption.
Volvo's electrification strategy aims have 50% of sales volume to be fully electric by 2025, while also being committed to putting one million electrified cars on the road in the same year.
The XC60 has been the Swedish brand's top-selling vehicle globally since 2009 and was awarded the World Car of the Year title in 2018. A year ago, the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) handed the XC60 its Top Safety Pick Plus accolade, along with the five-star rating it earlier earned from Euro NCAP.
