When the inclination of the autocollimating mirror to the optical axis
changes, the crossline image in the telescope eyepiece moves twice as far
as the illuminated portion of the image field (Fig. 12h). When the mirror
is inclined strongly the crosslines will be no longer visible in the ill-
uminated image field. This means a decrease in the measuring range as
the distance of the mirror increases. In the vicinity of the telescope the
measuring range is 30 min. , at a distance of 100 ft. 1 min.
Up to a measuring distance of 7 ft (2 m), the decrease of the illuminated
image field and the movement of the crossline image out of the illuminated
image field remain unnoticeable.
