The importance of education in his life is portrayed in this coin.The obverse features a portrait of Mr Mandela wearing an iconic Madiba shirt and South Africa's national flower,the King Protea.Nelson Mandela was a well educated man and a great believer in education and life long learning.He was the first member of his family to attend school,a single room schoolhouse in the village of Qunu.On his first day at school his teacher,Ms Mdingane,gave him the name "Nelson".This sterling silver R1 represents Mandela as a child practising writing "Nelson" on a slate board.Below the child is one of his quotations : "The children of today are the leaders of tomorrow and education is a very important weapon to prepare children for their future roles as leaders of the community."
