Beautiful piglets. If you see them, you will fall instantly in love with them. Great pets. South Africa’s indigenous Kolbroek breed is ideal for contributing to food security in rural areas. The modern animal, bred from a wide variety of breeds, offers many advantages: it requires little space, is an indiscriminate eater, has excellent maternal traits, and is generally healthy. Their smaller size and non-aggressive personalities makes them easier to manage than most pig breeds. They are hairy, have short tails, short snouts and medium-sized erect ears, a dish-faced head. They are hardy, which makes them ideal for the small-scale farmer. A mature Kolbroek weighs about 150kg, and fares extraordinarily well on a high-fibre diet. Early maturing and grows slower than modern breeds. The Kolbroek is an excellent forager and will eat almost anything edible, whether it is fallen fruit in the orchard, vegetable waste from the kitchen or crop residues from the market garden.
