Job Title: Scaffold Charge Hand

Report to: Operations

JOB PURPOSE

To lead and coordinate a scaffolding team on site, ensuring that scaffolding and temporary works are erected, altered, and dismantled safely, efficiently, and in compliance with approved risk assessments, procedures, and standards.

MINIMUM TRAINING & QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

The candidate must be in possession of the following valid training and certifications:
  1. Working at Heights
  2. Scaffold Erector
  3. Confined Space Entry
  4. Grade 12 (Matric)
  5. Valid Medical Fitness Certificate, including Working at Heights

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS


- Minimum 2-3 years experience in scaffolding operations
- Previous experience in construction, shutdown, or industrial environments
- Proven experience in leading or coordinating a scaffold team will be an advantage

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervision & Leadership
  1. Lead and supervise scaffold fixers and scaffold hands during erection, alteration, and dismantling of scaffolding and temporary works.
  2. Ensure that no work is performed without authorisation from the Scaffold Supervisor.
  3. Ensure that all team members understand and comply with task-specific risk assessments (TSRA/DSTI) and control measures.
  4. Maintain effective communication between team members and the Scaffold Supervisor at all times.
Health, Safety & Compliance
  1. Ensure that all scaffolding activities are carried out in accordance with safe work procedures, OHSA, and relevant SANS standards.
  2. Ensure that all team members are medically fit, trained, and competent for the tasks assigned.
  3. Stop work immediately if supervision is absent or if unsafe conditions are identified and report these to the Scaffold Supervisor.
  4. Ensure that proper housekeeping is maintained in the work area at all times.
Operational Responsibilities
  1. Coordinate the correct use of scaffolding materials, tools, and equipment to ensure safe and efficient operations.
  2. Ensure that no scaffolding is erected, altered, or dismantled without proper instruction and supervision.
  3. Assist the Scaffold Supervisor during inspections and audits when required.
Temporary Works & Structural Safety
  1. Ensure that temporary works structures are erected and supported in accordance with approved designs and are capable of supporting all anticipated vertical and lateral loads.
  2. Ensure that no loads are applied to scaffolds beyond their design capacity.
