Vintage Natex Foam or Soda-Acid Steel Fire Extinguisher Patent No 66/0610 with Large Knobbed Brass Cap
A COOL VINTAGE NATEX PATENT NO 66/0610 FOAM OR SODA-ACID STEEL FIRE EXTINGUISHER WITH BRASS CAP. Early twentieth century fire extinguishers that were all brass and copper where made from the 1880s to around WW2. From the 1940s to early 1990s the tanks were made from steel and brass only limited to the caps.
The chemical foam extinguisher was invented in 1904 by Aleksandr Loran in Russia, based on his previous invention of fire fighting foam. It worked and looked similar to the soda-acid type, but the inner parts were slightly different. Turn the knob to mix water solutions of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and aluminium sulphate. This creates foam under pressure. The foam stream is directed to spread like a blanket smotherin the fire.
A soda-acid extinguisher (invented in 1866) is a type of fire extinguisher that uses a mixture of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and an acid, typically sulfuric acid, to produce carbon dioxide gas. This gas is then used to smother and extinguish fires by cutting off the oxygen that supports the combustion process.By turning the knob on the fire extinguisher, the sulphuric acid reacts with the sodium bicarbonate solution and produces a little amount of carbon dioxide gas (CO2).
THE LARGE BRASS CAP ON THESE OLD FIRE EXTINGUISHER MAKES IT VERY COLLECTABLE. YOU CAN ALSO BECOME CREATIVE AND MAKE A COOL RETRO SIDE TABLE OUT OF IT.
