Savages Football Club – 9-Carat Gold Chain Fob Medals (1912 & 1913)

These are two vintage football chain fob medals awarded to W. Heffener of Savages F.C., commemorating victories in 1912 and 1913. Both medals are believed to be 9-carat gold, based on the hallmarks present on each piece.

Details:

• 1912 Medal:

Inscription: “S.F.C. – Won By W. Heffener – 1912.”

Hallmarks include a clear “9”, indicating 9-carat gold.

• 1913 Medal:

Inscription: “Durban & District League & Chizzari Cup Winners – Savages F.C. – W. Heffener – 1913.”

Hallmarked “9 CT” at the bottom.

Their craftsmanship, precise dates, and personal inscriptions make them rare and notable pieces of early South African football history. I have not been able to find anything similar online relating to Savages Football Club.

Savages F.C., founded in 1882 in Pietermaritzburg, is widely recognised as the oldest surviving football club in Africa, maintaining active teams throughout its long history—even during both World Wars.

Condition:

Given their age, the 1912 medal has a slight bend on the lower point. Otherwise, both pieces are in good vintage condition.
