Aérospatiale Alouette II Helicopter Controls
The Aérospatiale Alouette II was the world's first production helicopter powered by a gas-turbine engine, entering service in 1955. Renowned for its reliability and agility, it served with distinction in the South African Air Force (SAAF) and the Rhodesian Air Force, where it was employed for reconnaissance, casualty evacuation, troop transport, search and rescue, and counter-insurgency operations during the South African Border War and the Rhodesian Bush War.
Mounted on this display are two original Alouette II flight controls:
- Cyclic Control Stick – Positioned between the pilot's knees, the cyclic controls the helicopter's direction of flight by tilting the rotor disc, allowing movement forward, backward and sideways.
- Collective Pitch Lever – Mounted to the pilot's left, the collective changes the pitch of all main rotor blades simultaneously to control lift and altitude. The twist-grip throttle integrated into the lever regulates engine power.
These authentic controls represent the remarkable engineering and operational legacy of one of Southern Africa's most iconic military helicopters.
