Velddrif was discovered by Vasco da Gama in 1497 on his search for water in St Helena Bay. Carl Stephen was the first European to settle there and named it Laaiplek (Loading Place), he then started a fishing and farming business. The harbour became Laaiplek where ships could enter through a river mouth. The other side of the river a village which was named Velddrif around 2km further was named due to a farmer crossing livestock across a river. When entering Velddrif it is entered on a bridge with views of a salt works company, people fishing and restaurants on the river bank. Large sardines or harders which are caught are salted and dried out, a very popular dish on the West Coast. Velddrif (field crossing) has become a very popular destination for tourists. Bokkom Lane is a very well known street along the river with a variety of small diners and pelicans standing around and flamingoâ??s in the water. On the opposite side of the bridge, there are various fresh fish suppliers including more restaurants and it leads to a walk along the boats which are moored after a long shift of fishing. Velddrif hosts, dentists, doctors, shops and a care home.
