This area on the banks of the Orange river is an arid and mountainous area with fertile soil suitable for productive irrigation. Kakamas is a rather small town situated in the Northern Cape of South Africa. This interesting town was originally built by a church and named after the Khoi word for 'poor pasture'. Today, this name poorly reflects a fertile valley in the lower Orange River, graced with vineyards, citrus, and Lucerne fields. In Kakamas, the summers are sweltering, the winters are short and cool, and it is dry and mostly clear year-round.
