Some background information:
Around 300 years ago, when European settlers started moving into the region, the Overberg lowlands were teaming with large game such as Black Rhino, Bontebok, Eland and the now extinct Bluebuck and Quagga. These lowlands were most suitable for agriculture and as such over time 95% of these habitats have been converted into cash crops and wildlife was replaced by livestock. The Overberg contains some of the largest and most intact Renosterveld remnants, consisting of four different vegetation types, all critically endangered. Almost all Renosterveld remnants occur on privately-owned land, creating an additional challenge. These factors, coupled with the large range of endemic and threatened plant and animal species inhabiting this bio-hotspot, makes this unique habitat one of the most threatened habitats on Earth, putting it in urgent need of conservation attention.
The current owner of Schuldpads Gat farm, in partnership with the Renosterveld Conservancy Trust, who is responsible for fire breaks and the removal of alien vegetation, has managed to recover the veld that was neglected by mismanagement in the past. The farm has a game fence, stretching 11km around a large portion of the farm and eland, springbok and zebra have been introduced, while the fauna and flora offers rare protected plant species.
