Chrissiesmeer is a little village 35km east of Ermelo on the N17 towards Swaziland in the spectacular Highveld Grass and Wetlands and in the middle of the Lake District, which consists of 270 pans and lakes…all within a 20 km radius.
The historical Miss Chrissie's Country House offers superb sandstone accommodation and is only a visually stimulating 5 km drive from the village all along the side of the Large Lake. The house is only 800m from the Lake and offers a self-catering or catered option. It is a lovely sandstone building dating back to 1870 with private lounge and socializing areas with fireplaces, five en-suite bedrooms with fire-places as well as a restaurant and games and pool room. This is the ideal destination for family gatherings or groups of friends.
The farm is ideal for relaxing and getting away from city life. You can even join in with the farm activities involving our sheep, cattle and geese, feed the calves or maybe learn to milk a cow! We now also make cheese from our own milk…and the district and offers exciting activities and attractions – from frogging and birding to sailing and touch farming and many more…
Miss Chrissie is a lovely sandstone building dating back to 1870. It offers a private lounge with fireplaces, five en-suite bedrooms, a lounge, restaurant and pool room. The accommodation is in a restored sandstone building dating back to the 1870's. There are five on suite bedrooms each with its own individuality and exquisite linen.
The Lounge with a huge open fireplace is an enormous cosy room where you can spend endless evenings relaxing with your family or friends and a glass of wine. The Games room also has an open fireplace and an “Honesty Bar”, where you can spend many relaxing hours playing pool or throwing darts.
The Restaurant is furnished with furniture befitting the old sandstone structure. You can experience the most awe-inspiring sunsets over the 2000ha Lake from the veranda or while strolling around the large garden
Fishing No trout fishing in The Lake District – there is no river systems...only pans and lakes. Bass and carp are the two species caught in the deeper pans in the area. The best spot is at Eiland Meer.
Bird Watching Mpumalanga's best kept secret is also southern Africa's largest natural freshwater lake district. The pristine, sprawling wetland is home to 82 water birds and more than 100 other bird species, many of which are endemic to the region.
Rainfall and the level of the pans and lakes play a very important roll in birding in this area. The first waders arrive in September. The best time for birding will be from September to March.
Self-help Tours -- The Coffee Shoppe and Info centre in Chrissiesmeer, as well as most of the guest houses provide birding route maps. The route is a circular drive of 60 km, mainly gravel road. Best birding spots are marked on the map. Your host Aretha is a local water bird guide. She has a passion for water birds. Please contact her to arrange a birding tour. Aretha has permission to go on private land and know where to get the special ones.
Other Activities Canoeing, nature walks, night drives on weekends, table tennis. Croquet, darts, pool table, fishing, and two mountain bikes to ride
