Seedlings of Pouteria campechiana, the canistel or egg fruit tree, in 10-litre bags. It occurs naturally in Mexico southwards to Central America. The bright yellow flesh resembles a medium-hard egg yolk in texture but tastes like a very creamy and rich sweet potato or pumpkin. One of the most delicious fruits this grower has yet encountered but others find it too rich. The richness admittedly leads to a feeling of fullness very quickly. But it’s versatile: you can also use the pulp in smoothies, pancakes, and eggfruit knog. Grows into a handsome tree around 8m tall but can grow to 30m in humid conditions. Prune it to keep it smaller. Not a tree for the small garden or near walls, as its roots are said to be aggressive . Beautiful shiny leaves. Not read of invasive potential. Seeds lose viability within around two weeks and are too large for surface germination.
