A comprehensive account of the conflict which had by then riven the region for almost two decades. Since the early 1980s at least 12000 people had died in political violence in the province with thousands more rendered as homeless as refugees. Covers the rival theories of the ANC and IFP on the causes of the violence. The ANC blamed Inkatha and 'third force' elements seeking to retard or undermine the transition to democracy. Inkatha attributes the violence to the ANC/SACP alliance and a strategy of political destabilisation to eliminate political competition en route to the establishment of a centralised socialist state.

It attained a new intensity in the townships surrounding Durban in 1985 and in the Midlands region, around Pietermaritzburg, from 1987. In the 1990s, it spread to other areas - along the south coast and its hinterland, to the north of the Tugela River and into the heartland of what was then the KwaZulu homeland. It assumed the ferocity of an undeclared civil war - an 'unofficial war' "
