Life in the Karoo:Secret fire: the 1913-14 South African Journal of Pauline SmithPietermaritzburg, University of Natal Press, 1997Soft cover with pictorial wraps.Condition: Good, though the back cover is slightly worn/rough to the touch. When Pauline Smith returned to South Africa in August 1913, she had clear goals in mind: she would gather material for her writing. It was to be a monumental trip, for her and for South African literature. During this 1913 - 14 trip to the Little Karoo and environs, she kept a detailed journal that contained descriptive and atmospheric material, anecdotes, character sketches, imagery that would later be worked into five of the stories of The Little Karoo, including her celebrated tale, ''he Pain'' and for much of her novel, The Beadle. This journal reveals as much about the creative process as it does the historical and sociological themes and issues of South Africa at the time. She moved quietly through the countryside into the homes, along the streets of the Eastern Cape: 'very silent' as her friend and mentor, Arnold Bennet, observed. 'But with more secret fire in her than any of them.'Harold Scheub is Professor of African Languages and Literature at the University of Winsconsin-Madison. He had been a student of Pauline Smith for a number of years. (More ads from this seller)
