Description
Thomas Bowler His Life And Work by Frank R. Bradlow with a foreward by Dr. William Fehr Limited edition 173/1100 An edition of 1100 copies, of which one thousand have been numbered and signed by the author. A biography and definitive catalogue of paintings and prints Since the publication in 1956 of his earlier study of Bowler, Frank Bradlow has been continuing his research and conscientiously adding to the data originally collected: as a result, over 500 authenticated original paint- ings and drawings of Bowler have been revealed a truly astonishing body of work. Bowler was a fine water-colourist, with o genuine feeling for the world around him: there are landscapes with recognisable topographic features; street scenes with the atmosphere of nineteenth century small-town life; that reveal the quiet flavour of the past; there are exciting maritime and shipping pictures, with many variations of what must have been his favourite subject Table Bay. His oeuvre and versatility was impressive; his eye, experienced and enthusiastic. He is also revealed as a maritime painter with a real understanding of the movement of light and water. The emphasis in this book is on Bowler's work: there is an exhaustive and definitive catalogue of all his known paintings, with detailed notes on authenticity, provenance, ownership, size and condition; 193 of these are illustrated in monochrome; there are 29 full-page plates in colour-probably as ambitious a coverage as has ever been accorded to a South African artist; and a full introduction on his style, media and way of work. There is also a complete catalogue of the group of fine lithographs that are known to the general public as the 'Bowler prints, all but three of which are illustrated. An introduction to this in the form of a technical and historical study of contemporary lithographs is an invaluable reference for the collector, especially as all the known information on the prints has been corrected and brought up to date. Interesting additional facts are provided: the prices realised at the Sir Abe Bailey sale in 1951; the papers concerned with Bowler's estate; names and addresses of owners of paintings. To provide a more convincing taste of what Bowler's work was really like, a full size repro- duction in colour of one of his most famous paintings is included (folded and tipped in); this is his Arrival of the East Indiaman 'St Lawrence'in Table Bay, 1861. It is reproduced facsimile, to the most exacting standards of reproduction. Thomas Bowler is the latest of the Africana Series of fine quarto volumes by the same publisher, all of which give emphasis to quality of illustration and scholarship (catalogue available). 29 colour plates 193 monochrome illustrations One full-size facsimile reproduction Condition - Excellent A more detailed description will be given on request Hardcover Published in 1967 by A.A Balkema Length - 317 pages Collection in Norwood or can be couriered at buyers expense
