Description
South Africa: The New Revolution by Don Caldwell Foreword by Aggrey. Klaaste Inscribed by Author When Don Caldwell asked me to write the foreword to this second printing of South Africa: The New Revolution, I reflected briefly on the actual value of such literary endeavours. Why do people like Caldwell, and people like me, spend time writ- ing or reading books which to all intents and purposes should be seriously read and used by the leaders of the country? What can authors and reviewers of their books do to influence those in charge of destinies of nations? Are these books, written with passion, a great deal of thought, and refreshing originality, such as Caldwell's, ever placed before such leaders? What is interesting about this book is that it not only gives a new, stimulating solution to the country's problems, it breaks excellent ground by turning most conventional wisdom on its head. "To embrace free enterprise as a solution, people must be convinced it would both defuse the nation's conflict and benefit them personally," is the type of sentiment that touches at the very nub of the complex resolution of the South African problem. The book unashamedly advocates free enterprise and its twin sis- ter, capitalism. Caldwell says free enterprise is in fact a practical way out of South Africa's morass, as it offers freedom to the masses and security to nervous whites. The book is profoundly timeous. South Africans, following massive shifts in world hegemonial and ideological positions, seem to be falling into step with such trends. The creative space for debate is being opened both from the state and from the various actors in the political battlefield. In other words, such books are historically appropriate to help bold, imaginative, and creative thinkers get an audience, so that the ideas can be debated and hopefully tested by the leaders. Many blacks, who are rather more sympathetic towards a type of socialist future, would perhaps find the book overly eager in endorsing free enterprise. But whether you agree with Caldwell's philosophy, whether you agree that free enterprise can lead to greater freedoms, the book is stimulating and has to be read.
