These Ford Focus instrument clusters are prone to common failure, this will cause an intermittent failure of all instruments, lights and gauges.
If the instrument cluster fails while driving, then this will often cause the engine to cut out. If failure happens while attempting to start the vehicle then it will prevent the engine from starting. You will notice the immobilizer light flashes continuously when the instrument cluster fails and the mileage reading will only show dashes (-------) instead of the mileage.
Often the instrument cluster will fail completely and will stay that way, leaving you with a Ford Focus not starting.
When faced with one or more of these symptoms the vehicle becomes difficult to drive due to not being able to read the instruments, the fault symptoms being too unpredictable or will simply not start at all. An attempt to swap out the faulty cluster with a replacement unit will require coding to the vehicle at an extra expense.
