I have just reduced this R1800 ! This is a rare poster by Jean d'Ylen called “Clown with Suspenders”. This original colour lithograph shows a joyous Pierrot leaping into midair with the help of his braces or suspenders. This work of art would be great anywhere in the home, from the lounge, the den or the bedroom.
Subject as these posters were to wind, rain, and being covered up by posters from rival firms, the ephemeral poster nonetheless became the subject of passionate collecting in its own time. The poster craze, known as affichomanie, revolved around the acquisition of these posters, from buying and selling special editions to stealthy removals from walls and kiosks.
Jean d’Ylen’s work was presented at the Salon de la Publicite where it was written that: 'Since Cheret, we have never seen such talent and Jean d'Ylen is really the master of the modern poster'. He designed posters for Waterman, Shell, Bally and Sandeman's Port. His posters were not only all over the walls of France but also Europe and North America. In 1938, he died prematurely, at the height of his career.
His defining comment was in 1921, when he said, 'A poster must be expressive, colourful and have an attraction which captures the attention of a passer by'.
The photos with the poster in rooms is for illustrative purposes only and may not be exactly to scale.
