What is RustStop RS5? The RustStop RS5 Electronic Rust Protection System uses a combination of Cathodic Protection and an Impressed Current to protect your vehicle from rust. The system generates a small electrical current that spreads across the metal surfaces of your vehicle, creating an environment where rust formation is inhibited. The sacrificial anodes, included in the system, gradually corrode instead of the vehicle's metal, offering an additional layer of protection. How Does It Work? RustStop RS5 uses the method of Cathodic Protection combined with an impressed current. Strips of aluminium electrodes termed anodes or rust magnets are attached where water is likely to collect or run. The essence of cathodic protection is that the unwanted anodes in the vehicle's metal are suppressed an impressed current from RustStop's externally attached anodes. The potential of the metal to be protected is now substantially lower compared to the attached anodes (45 V), turning the anodes in the vehicle's metal into cathodes. This creates one large cathode (the vehicle) and one large anode (the external anodes). The externally attached anodes corrode instead of the vehicle. The output voltage on the anode of 45 volts creates a large potential difference between the cathode (vehicle) and the anode. This strong attraction of electrons to the anodes makes the system highly effective. Installation Installing the RustStop RS5 is straightforward and can be done with basic tools. No drilling or cutting wires, and it has no effect on the vehicle’s electronics. The system is available in two configurations: a 4-anode system for smaller vehicles and a 6-anode system for vans, bakkies, and larger vehicles with more metal to protect.
