Tyres and Rims
The avid consumer purchases different rims to further define the persona of their cars, and tyres have become an annual necessity. With the cost of new rims and tyres being generally high, being able to purchase secondhand tyres and rims offers a reasonable alternative.
Many companies focus specifically on rims as their main product. Rims, also referred to as wheels, come with different sizes, uses, and applications. Rim sizes range from as small as 13 inches (33 centimetres) to as large as 22 inches (56 centimetres). Rims are also bought for different intended uses. Enkei, for instance, builds wheels to be used for racing applications, such as its RPF1. RPF1s are lightweight and made of forged aluminium. The BBS RS series is a wheel built specifically for the looks of the vehicle. The RS is a two-piece aluminium forged wheel that can be coupled with custom lips to give the wheel a deeper dish look.
Tyres are more commonly seen as an investment, and many tyre companies focus their time on making their tyres safe and reliable. The life of a tyre depends on its construction, the type of rubber used, and its tread design. Pirelli P Zero all-performance tyres use an updated tread design that has more grooves to allow for better traction in all types of weather conditions. The Falken Azenis series uses a specific tread design which allows water to escape efficiently from under the tyres, providing better grip in wet conditions. They also feature a stiffer bead construction, which makes the tyres less prone to flats.
The prices of used tyres and rims are broad, but good quality tyres and rims can be bought locally for less. Prices of smaller new wheels average R700 a piece, and larger wheels can reach upwards of R10 000 a piece. Tyres tend to be less expensive with smaller 13-15 inch tyres being priced around R150, and larger tyres reaching upwards of R2 200. But, used tyres can be bought for less, being priced around R2 200 for a set of any sized tyres depending on location. Used rims decrease in value over time as well, and can be had for under R5 300 a set in any size.
With the harsh weather conditions South Africa provides, replacing worn tyres and rims is essential to the safe operation of a vehicle. With secondhand tyres and rims, you can replace yours inexpensively.
