Tow Truck

Purchasing a used tow truck in South Africa can be a lucrative small business venture to consider. Locals and visitors may find themselves stranded on the side of the road or in a collision. When these situations arise, towing services are often needed. While searching for the right truck it is also ideal to search for extra accessories and equipment for the truck.

Search for Used Equipment

When you buy a tow truck, there are used options that have plenty of life left in them. What you want to look for is a strong transmission, strong engine and low miles. Checking the hydraulics on a flatbed option is also important. Improperly working hydraulics will not allow the bed to rise upward or come back far enough to safely load the vehicle. The tyres on the truck should be free of bulges, dry rot and thread showing.

Consider the Hauling Capacity

There are different classifications for a tow truck. An experienced tow truck driver should be aware of the maximum number of autos that the truck can carry safely. In most cases, a civilian classification allows for two vehicles per flatbed. A hook wrecker can only carry one vehicle at any time. Larger trucks can carry pickup trucks, mid-size vehicles and even sprinters. For autos such as a semi, bus or other large commercial vehicles, a heavy wrecker is needed.

What Equipment is Included

Tow trucks require the use of additional equipment. A good, non-kinked wench cable is a requirement. Kinks reduce the effectiveness of the wench cable, which can cause it to snap. Several tow hooks also need to be in place. Axles on autos are different sizes, and when hooking to this portion of the auto, a snug fit is required. Other equipment that is important is collision clean up materials and emergency roadside assist tools. This includes tyre irons, floor jacks, wrenches, and pliers.

Buying a used tow truck is a good way to get your feet wet in the emergency assistance industry. One single truck is able to make short trips and assist multiple customers per day. The addition of additional trucks expands the business and lets the company branch out to neighbouring villages or cities. Keep in mind that a used truck can suffice just as well as a brand new piece of equipment.
