Van gogh
by keith wheldon
1st edition 1989
van gogh is a painter renowned today for his tragic life and for the high prices his works now fetch at auction the tragedy is all the greater as he sold almost none of his paintings during his lifetime the nineteenth century public was not ready for his bold, uncompromising brushstrokes and his use of pure intense colour although he once said that he was expressing the 'terrible human emotions with the colours red and green, his paintings are far more than the unmediated outpourings of a tortured psyche art historian keith wheldon takes a fresh look at van gogh's work, and demonstrates that many factors including his middle class background and fear of women, influenced both his style and his choice of subject
van gogh's earliest works date from the 1880s when he painted local dutch weavers and peasants in sombre earth tones it was only later, particularly when he was working in the brilliant sunshine of arles in the south of france, that he developed the colourful palette of such familiar images as the sunflowers, the starry night and van gogh's room following several spells in an asylum, his artistic vision darkened and his style be came increasingly agitated, culminating in crows over a wheatfield, the last painting before his suicide
for this new large format book, 120 of van gogh's best loved works and many fasci nating lesser known paintings have been chosen each is reproduced in full colour, described in detail and placed in the context of van gogh's whole oeuvre van gogh brings fresh insight into one of the world's most popular but misunderstood painters, and this is a book that will continue to give pleasure to art lovers and historians for years to come
keith wheldon was educated at the univer sities of east anglia and sussex, and at the courtauld institute of art he has written and lectured on a wide range of nineteenth and twentieth century subjects and contributed to a number of films, exhibitions, and television programmes he is involved with research on european symbolism, and is making a special study of renoir's later work he also writes on postwar and contemporary art he is presently senior lecturer in art history at oxford polytechnic

by freda kibel
1st edition
limited edition no 516 of 750
a brief sketch of his life and work by freda kibel and a critical assessment of his work by neville dubow
50 text pages, 12 colour plates (including a self portrait of the artist as frontispiece), 42 black & white illustrations
wolf kibel (16 december 1903 – 29 june 1938) was a south african painter and printmaker he was partly responsible for the introduction of expressionism to south africa his paintings and monotypes have earned him recognition as a sincere and gifted artist
wolf kibel was born in grodzisk, a village near warsaw, the capital city of poland, on 16 december, 1903 at the end of the eighteenth century the country had lost the last remnants of its political independence and had been partitioned into three, kibel's native village falling within the area ruled by russia, who administered its part of poland with an iron hand
since long before the partition of poland its jewish population had lived in ghettoes and had been denied many of the rights enjoyed by the gentile section of the community, a state of affairs which also held in russia from a mode of life otherwise intolerable the jews found some solace by drowning themselves in their ancient religious and cultural traditions kibel himself came of a family of singers, some of international renown his own father had actually been kidnapped by the grodzisk congregation on account of his fine voice, and was employed by the community in the dual capacities of cantor and shochet
wolf himself was the third boy and fifth child of a family of eight he was a very beautiful child with long golden curls, blue eyes and finely cut features his brother has told me that as a youngster wolf looked 'like an angel'

botticelli
by alexandra grömling & tilman lingesleben
" of many of botticelli's women and youths one might say that they have just awoken as from a dream to consciousness of the outside world, and although they actively devote themselves to the outside world, dream images still echo through their conscious minds "
botticelli otticelli succeeded in an entirely unique manner in translating the ideals of humanism, as propagated by poets and philosophers, into the medium of the fine arts he made visible the idealized beauty that filled the neoplatonists in marsilio ficino's circle with such enthusiasm in his clear, refined painting style he created the most poetic religious and mythological scenes of his age during the second half of the 15th century, the famous allegorical main works produced for the medici ruler lorenzo il magnifico made sandro botticelli the most important interpreter of the artistic and cultural flowering that was the renaissance

Georgia o' keeffe
by nancy frazier
with 70 full colour and 15 black and white illustrations
using nature as her inspiration, georgia o' keeffe developed a highly visible, per sonal, and monumental style without parallel in american painting perhaps more symbolic than abstract, o' keeffe's paintings of simplified, enlarged and iso lated natural forms expressed the spiritu ality of nature, and of the artist herself recognized as one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century georgia o' keeffe created paintings that had a powerful effect on other artists and on the public yet the more the public came to love her work, the more controversial o' keeffe became ironically, the popularity of her works and her own personal image as an eccentric have sometimes worked to blur her importance as an artistic innovator
born in wisconsin in 1887, o' keeffe knew she would be an artist by the time she was 12 she studied at the art institute of chicago and at the art students league in new york city in new york she met photographer alfred stieglitz, whom she married in 1924 stieglitz exhibited her paintings in his new york gallery, where they caused ripples of excitement and scandal as o' keeffe's reputation grew, she struggled to maintain an independent mind and fresh artistic perspective she dressed only in black and white, but in her work she seemed to invent color as a contempo rary artist remarked, " in her canvases each color almost regains the fun it must have felt within itself on forming the first rainbow "
in the late 1920s o' keeffe began to spend time in the southwest, and after her husband's death in 1946 she moved permanently to new mexico it was in the southwest that she began to make visible the concept that art and one's senses are inseparable for o' keeffe, sensuality was realized in the stark design of her floral forms and other natural elements that overwhelmed the space of her canvases probably most like a trademark were her paintings of animal skulls, done without morbidity, but with a symmetrical grace expressive of their affinity with the eternal
with an insightful text accompanying a portfolio of her finest works in full color, this book captures the haunting, sometimes overwhelming quality of georgia o' keeffe's unique vision
n a n c y f r a z i e r, who graduated from sarah lawrence college, spent her junior year in paris visiting museums and studying art history her early profes sional life was in magazine journalism, first at newsweek and then as the found ing editor of a weekly feature magazine, hampshire life
in 1985 nancy frazier's book, special museums of the northeast, was published since then she has edited a museum goers newsletter, museum insights, issued six times a year, which specializes in find ing small museums with exceptional col lections across north america
recently, to combine her interests in art and writing, ms frazier returned to school and is currently enrolled as a graduate student in art history at the university of massachusetts in amherst in this book about georgia o' keeffe, ms frazier explores the fascination of the artist as innovator and as an american icon

historical postcards
by oscar i norwich
in his book, a johannesburg album, dr oscar norwich traces the beginnings and early development of johannesburg's suburbs in a series of over 325 historical picture postcards, most of them in colour the pictures are all reproduced from original postcards, the majority drawn from dr norwich's personal collection which he began in earnest about twenty five years ago the book describes the earliest suburbs and areas of the mining town, beginning with the market square and including suburbs such as doornfontein, jeppestown, fordsburg, parktown, saxonwold, yeoville, berea, and braamfontein each chapter begins with a brief history of the suburb and continues with the magnificent postcards there are also chapters on crises and events, including the jameson raid, the braamfontein dynamite explosion and the 1913 miners' strike; chinese on the mines and mining this album, the result of many years' collecting and research, will be a delight to everyone, particularly those with an interest in architecture, and those who can remember the earliest suburbs nestling in the koppies, 'miles' from the town centre
oscar i norwich, f r c s, has over a period of forty years assembled a remarkable collection of africana, comprising books, maps and postcards his enquiring mind and great interest in history led him to research all his south african post cards, those of johannesburg in particular, instead of filing them away to be looked at occasionally for the pictures the result of dr norwich's hard work and dedication is a johannesburg album, valuable not only for the original historical postcards, but also for the information on the history of johannesburg, its suburbs and buildings, since it was proclaimed one hundred years ago
dr norwich is founder chairman of the johannesburg historical foundation, founded in 1971, chairman of the friends of the library of the university of the witwatersrand, chairman of the johannesburg art gallery committee and a trustee of the gallery, and a member of the africana museum advisory committee of the johannesburg city council his most recent publication is maps of africa
