The Land Rover is a legendary vehicle with a reputation for being stylish and sporting at the same time. It is best known for its rugged durability and seemingly indestructible body. It is considered by many to be the top-of-the line four-wheel drive vehicle. It's the second oldest four-wheel drive vehicle, surpassed in age only by Jeep. The Land Rover of today is based on the original 1948 model; until 1978, the vehicles were made by the Rover Company. In 1978, the Land Rover Company came into being. The company has been part of various motor companies, including BMW and Ford Motor Company. In 2008, it was acquired by Tata Motors. There are several models of Land Rovers in South Africa, including the Freelander, Discovery, and Defender.
Land Rover Freelander
New or used, the Land Rover Freelander is a compact version of a rugged sport utility vehicle. The Freelander debuted in 1997. Today's Freelander is known as the Freelander 2. This smaller model Land Rover does not have the lower-range gear selection or locking differential that is common on full-size Land Rovers, which kept the Freelander from having the same off-road performance. Despite this, the model was popular in the compact SUV market.
Land Rover Discovery
The Land Rover Discovery is Land Rover's mid-size SUV , and is known for its excellent off-road performance. It's lower price tag made it more competitive in the marketplace. The Discovery has been through four generations, with the Discovery 4 being the most recent one on the market. It's available in a 6-speed automatic and a 6- or 8-speed manual transmission, with a choice of two 3,0 litre V6 engines.
Land Rover Defender
The Land Rover Defender is the iconic model in the Land Rover line-up, and it was one of the original Land Rover models that debuted in 1948. The Defender's 67 year production run will end in December 2015. The original names were the Land Rover Ninety and the Land Rover One-Ten; the numbers in the names represented the wheelbase. The Defender name was introduced in 1990, after the Discovery model was launched in 1989. Buying a second-hand Land Rover Defender is a good investment, given that it is going to be phased out.
Used Land Rovers for sale in South Africa include the older models like the Discovery and the Defender as well as the newer Discovery 3 and Discovery 4. Outdoor sports enthusiasts will enjoy the off-road capabilities as well as the sporty designs of these vehicles. If off-road performance is not important, the Freelander is an excellent option that offers Land Rover styling and durability in a compact design.
