KTM is an iconic brand of motorcycles. It is known for a number of things, including Enduro motorcycles, off-road motorcycles, and orange styling. The company is from Austria, its origins can be traced back to 1934 and a man called Johann Trunkenpolz. He started manufacturing his own motorcycles in 1951 and set about racing them in short track and Enduro races. When most people think of KTM they think of motorcycles bouncing over sand dunes or negotiating a rocky descent on a mountain.
The flagship products in the KTM range are the off road motorcycles. It starts with the MX or motocross models of motorcycle. These are racing bikes that range from 50cc 2-strokes up to 450cc 4-strokes. They have quick acceleration and great manoeuvrability. You will see KTM MX motorcycles in South Africa on Saturday afternoons during amateur races as well as in professional championships both nationally and internationally.
The Enduro model of KTM motorcycle is for off road use but it comes with the necessary equipment and specifications to make it road legal. Enduro motorcycles are built for racing and riding over longer distances on tougher and more variable terrain. They start at the 2-stroke 125 and go up to the powerful liquid-cooled 690cc 4-stroke.
There are two other models of bike in the off road range. The first is the Freeride, which is powered by an electric engine. The second is the Travel which is designed for long-distance riding both on and off the road.
For those who want a strictly on-road motorcycle KTM has a couple of options. For city driving there is the Supermoto, which is based on its off road siblings, but is designed for road driving only. Then for those that want to cruise with a bit more power on the open road there is the Naked Bike. The top model in this range has a whopping 1 300cc 4-stroke engine.
There is an extensive KTM dealer network across South Africa. The secondhand KTM market is also busy, as the brand remains popular. You can easily find new and used KTM bikes in South Africa, especially in the larger cities.
