Jewellery & Watches

Buying used jewellery and watches can be a great way to save money while adding to your jewellery collection. It can also be a good way to find unique pieces for little cost. Knowing what to look for and being able to tell the difference between real and fake can make the process of buying used watches and jewellery a bit easier.

Gold is often measured by its karat weight, which indicates how much of it is pure gold and how much consists of other metals. Pure gold, whether it is white gold or yellow gold, is 24 karats, whereas other karat weights are a combination of gold and metal that adds up to 24. In other words, 18-karat gold is 18 parts gold and 6 parts other metals. Likewise, 14-karat gold is 14 parts gold and 10 parts other metals. The higher the karat number, the softer the gold. Mixing in other metals makes the jewellery more durable. If an item is described as being gold-plated, vermeil or gold overlay, it simply means that an outer layer of gold is applied over another metal such as sterling silver. Keep in mind that gold plating will eventually wear off.

When buying jewellery that contains gemstones, there are a few things to consider. Firstly, regardless of whether the stone is genuine or lab-created, check the settings of the piece. Be on the lookout for broken or loose prongs or any indications of repair. If it is a necklace or bracelet, check the clasp as well. As far as the genuineness of the gemstone, consider whether or not you want an authentic gemstone or if a lab-created or simulated stone is acceptable. For example, tanzanite stones are less expensive alternatives to stones such as sapphires and diamonds.

Before buying used watches, it helps to be familiar with various brands, their reputation for durability and the value of specific designs. If you are interested in owning a certain brand of watch, gather information about that company and become familiar with its identifying marks. Find out if some models are considered more durable than others. For any brand or style of watch, check for damage and signs of malfunctioning.

Buying used jewellery and watches is an effective way to save money while adding unique and attractive items to your collection. Used watches, rings, necklaces and gemstones can often be purchased at a fraction of their original price.
