Golf

The game of golf traces its origins back to 15th-century Scotland, though the exact date of its invention is hotly debated amongst historians. Some argue that it can be traced further back to games played in the Roman Empire or even further back in history. What can be said, however, is that golf has become a popular sport worldwide, including South Africa. The country is home to numerous golf courses and tours, with used golfing equipment sold all across the nation.

Golf Courses

A basic golf course consists of a series of nine to 18 holes. Each course across South Africa has its own unique design and flair. This variety forces players to consistently adapt their play style to the challenges that each course presents. Golf courses can be found across the many provinces of South Africa. A few of the highest-rated courses include Leopard Creek, which is on the edge of Kruger National Park, Fancourt, which features the Outeniqua Mountains in the background, and Blair Atholl, which is one of the longest golf courses in the world.

Golf Equipment

Because of the popularity of golf in South Africa, secondhand golf supplies are sold all across the nation. Standard equipment includes clubs, putters, balls and bags. In order to play a full course, a player will need at least one driver for hitting the ball long distances, a wedge for getting the ball out of sand traps, and a putter for sinking the ball in the hole once it reaches the green. Players should always bring a few extra balls with them, in case they lose a ball in a lake or forested area. Other equipment may include a golf cart, hats, shoes and sunglasses.

Golf Tours

In addition to individual courses, several resorts offer players the chance to participate in golf tours. These tours typically run for multiple days, during which a player can travel to several local golf courses near the resort. Players can enjoy the courses at their leisure or participate in competitions amongst themselves. Many people enjoy these tours as relaxing vacation opportunities.

Golf in South Africa is open to both experienced players and newcomers alike. The wealth of available courses means that many people will not have to travel far to find a course, while the sale of used golf equipment can keep prices down.
