Johan Smith 1975 – | Windmill | 700mm x 500mm | Oil on Canvas | R25500 Johan was born in Zimbabwe, and moved to South Africa in 1975. While studying agriculture at the University of Stellenbosch he took classes in ceramics as well. His work was selected for both regional and national exhibitions for the South African Potters Association. The constraints of ceramics such as colour and the tedious production process led Johan to experiment with watercolour . Gold leaf combined with ink and water colours led to a unique decorative style. It was in this medium that Johan held his first one man exhibition at the Dorp Street Gallery. In 1995 Johan gave up his career as researcher to practice art full-time. His work progressed from watercolours to pastels and hand coloured etchings, however it was the vibrant colours of oils that intrigued the artist. His subjects vary from still-life and flowers to landscapes and figures. Johan has held many one man exhibitions and his paintings are in private collections around the world. It has been included in collections of the SAA, Telkom and Rand Afrikaans University.
