Freightliner

Freightliner trucks are the standard when it comes to business-class trucks. Once an American company, the ownership shifted to German company Daimler-Benz in 1981. However, it was not until the late 2000s that the trucks became popular in South Africa, thanks to the addition of a manufacturing plant in the country. The plant creates two popular models of Freightliner, the Columbia and the Argosy. Consider both of these new or used Freightliners when shopping in South Africa.

The Argosy

The Argosy is a popular Freightliner truck that offers a wider cab to give drivers more room to move around on those long hauls. The cab also offers a raised-roof for headroom. Inside, the dash and instrument panels are ergonomic, which means they are easy to use without stretching and straining.

The transmission system is shift by wire, which reduces the amount of clutch use. Drivers only use the clutch during starting and stopping. This also gives the truck better fuel economy. This Freightliner complies with all European ECE R 29 safety standards and is a very safe truck in a crash.

The Columbia

The Columbia is the best-selling Freightliner truck. It offers many benefits over the Argosy, including better cost per kilometre, better fuel economy, and lower maintenance costs. The interior features a wraparound dash with easy to use, ergonomic controls. LEDs light up all activated switches. The cab is a sleeper cab, which is essential for drivers on long hauls.

This model also offers the shift by wire transmission. With just a flip of the lever, the driver can switch from automatic to manual transmission settings. However, the clutch is still necessary for starting and stopping. This Freightliner also meets all safety standards.

Engine Types

New Freightliners offer several different types of engines, depending on the model and its purpose. Generally, drivers have a choice between Cummins and Detroit Diesel engines. The three Cummins engines include the 500/6 IL, 620/6 IL, and the 530/6 IL. Detroit Diesel engines include the Series 60 470/6 IL and the Series 60 500/6 IL.

When considering a secondhand Freightliner for hauling products, note the size and type of truck. Some sellers may only include the cab, while others include the trailer. If there is a trailer, make sure it meets the needs of the business. For example, a tanker trailer does not meet the needs of a business that hauls lumber or rocks.
