Ford Escort

The Ford Escort is one of the most popular and successful car models of all time. It hit the market in 1968 as a small, affordable family car in 1968. The car went through six generations of design changes before being phased out in 2002. In 2014, the Ford Motor Company announced the relaunch of the Ford Escort but only for the Chinese motor vehicle market.

Introduction of the Ford Escort

The Ford Escort went on sale in Great Britain in 1968 as a replacement for the popular Ford Anglia. In the UK, it became the bestselling car of the 1960s. By 1974, the company had sold more than 2 million Ford Escorts. The car became just as popular all over western Europe. The Escort was available as a two-door or four-door saloon, a three-door estate, or a two-door panel van. The engine size varied from the gentle 939 cc Crossflow engine to the dynamic 1 994 cc Pinto powertrain. All Escorts featured rear-wheel drive and either a four-speed manual or a three-speed automatic transmission.

Ford Escort Generations from 1974-2002

The second generation Ford Escort hit the market in 1974. At that time, the car was also making waves in the Australian and Israeli markets. Ford introduced subsequent generations every four or five years with subtle changes to the styling and enhancements to the engine, instruments, and interiors. The Mark IV launched in 1986 with a number of trim designations, including the LX, Ghia, Sport, Cabriolet, XR3i, and RS Turbo. The final generation launched in 1995, but the vehicle's popularity started to wane after that. Ford discontinued the model in 2002 with more than 4 million Escorts sold up to that point in the UK alone. The Mark III (1980-86) was the most popular generation with 1,5 million Mark IIIs registered as road-worthy at one time.

The Ford Escort earned respect as a reliable, family-oriented car with a little bit more 'oomph' than other cars in the same power and price range. A used Ford Escort is usually easy to find because of the vehicle's immense popularity. The price of a secondhand Ford Escort varies tremendously, depending on the vehicle's age and condition.
