Dogs and Puppies

Dogs and puppies are social animals that make great house pets for all types of people and families. Certain breeds make good watch dogs or working dogs, while others are more suitable for simple human companionship. However, those who plan to adopt dogs and puppies in South Africa should be aware of the care they require.

Puppy Care

Before bringing a new puppy into your home, you should purchase necessary supplies and puppy-proof the home. Supplies that a puppy needs include a collar, leash, food and water bowls, a crate for house training, and dog toys. Puppy-proof your home by putting toxic plants and household chemicals out of reach. Secure electrical cords to baseboards and keep shoes and other objects put away so the puppy does not chew on them. Dog toys also help distract puppies from undesirable chewing behaviour. Introduce a puppy to a collar and leash immediately and start training right away.

Puppies need fresh food and water available to them at all times. Take the puppy outside for potty breaks after naps and every meal. Be sure to give your puppy plenty of attention and bonding time and pick a safe place for him to reside when you cannot give him your full attention. Veterinarian appointments for regular check-ups and vaccination are also important to a puppy's health.

Dog Care

Adopting or rehoming a dog is a big responsibility. Dogs require plenty of exercise and should be allowed to run and play in a yard or park. Bonding and socialising with your dog are important because dogs are social animals. Behaviour problems may arise if they do not engage in adequate human interaction. Set rules for your dog and stick to them. For example, if you do not want your dog on the furniture, give him a comfortable pet bed of his own. If he tries to climb onto the furniture, use a stern voice to let him know he cannot do that and direct him to his bed. Consistency is important for establishing good behaviour in dogs.

You can find dogs and puppies in South Africa, but you need to take into consideration the amount of care and attention these animals need. Select a breed that works well for you and your family. Proper care of puppies and dogs results in a lifelong bond for you both.
