Coal Stove

Owning a coal stove offers a variety of benefits. An increasing number of off-grid and self-reliant home makers are turning to coal stoves as a way to heat their homes for less money. With the variety of coal stoves available, you can combine cooking with heating your home to save even more money. Additionally, buying a used coal stove can save you even more. If you are considering buying a secondhand coal stove or upgrading your current stove, you should consider the two main types of coal stoves and the accessories you will need for each.

Stoker Coal Stove

A stoker stove is a popular style because it is an automatic coal burning option. This type of coal stove has an inbuilt stoker which moves the coals and allows fresh coals to move into the fire. A blowing mechanism is located at the bottom of the stove to allow fresh air to circulate among the coals. This is the type of stove used with coal pellet options. Venting the stove is done through a power venting method. The fire is started manually, and then the automatic stoking takes over.

Hand Fired Coal Stove

Hand fired coal stoves are completely manual and do require a venting option such as a chimney. You will need the chimney output for the stove pipe in addition to the coal stove. You will also need a coal stove set, or at the very least a stoker to help keep the fire going and the coals hot.

Coal Bins, Ash Bins, and Grates

While you are searching for the perfect secondhand coal stove, also consider a coal bin, ash bin, and burning surface or grate. Coal bins will keep your coal in reach if you have a hand fired unit. Ash bins are necessary for stoker coal stoves, and you will need to make sure you have the proper burners. Though most stoves come with these items, you may have to look for some separately when you buy secondhand units.

Regardless of the type of coal stove you choose, you will need proper installation and maintenance to ensure that it does its job effectively and for years to come. Make sure you have the installation guide or an installation specialist available to help you with this step, and make sure you understand the difference between the different types of coal stoves to best determine which one suits your needs before buying.
