Bull Terrier

In the early 1800s, breeders crossed the bulldog with the terrier. The result of this cross was a dog that had the courage and determination of the bulldog with the agility and drive of the terrier. It was not until about 1860 that Englishmen James Hinks introduced the dogs to the show arena, forming the breed standard.

Physical Appearance

Originally called white cavaliers, breeders soon changed the name to bull terrier. Originally, bull terriers were all white but, beginning in the early 1900s, breeders introduced other colours, and today there are many officially recognised colours. The dogs are known for their egg-shaped head with prominent eyes. Dogs should stand about 56 centimetres tall and weigh about 28 kilogrammes. Bitches should stand about 56 centimetres tall and weigh about 28 kilogrammes.

Personality

Bull terriers have a courageous attitude that tries the will and patience of the person who owns them. Therefore, they often do better in homes with no small children. In most cases, experienced dog owners do better with these assertive dogs. Bull terriers do not have a lot of energy, so they do well in small apartments or in a small fenced yard. They prefer to be indoors because they do not handle extreme cold well. They are intelligent, so the owner needs to provide them with challenges to keep them entertained, or they can become destructive. This breed can be dog aggressive, so they usually do better in homes that have no other dogs.

Care

The bull terrier's short fine coat does not require much care. They do shed, so brushing helps remove the excess hair. Use a chamois cloth to wipe down the dog after grooming to encourage a natural sheen to the coat. Owners need to take this dog on short walks daily. The dog needs to eat a high-quality dog food twice a day for about 15 minutes. Offering continual food often leads to a fat dog that is lazy and has health problems.

Before looking for bull terriers for sale in South Africa, it is important to consider whether this is the right breed for you. Then, look at all the different possibilities, including dogs, bitches, and puppies. Look for a dog that has been vet checked. If it is an older dog or bitch, look to buy a bull terrier in South Africa with a great personality.
