Bloemfontein is lush, verdant city that is known as the ""City of Roses"" to South Africans. It is a popular, vibrant, centrally located city which enjoys excellent air, road, and rail links, and sports a bustling public transport system that serves all the points of the compass. As such, it is easily reachable from almost anywhere, and is popular with visitors from both South Africa and further afield.

The city is an important one, being placed among South Africa's three national capitals. The name of the city comes from a Dutch word which means ""fountain of flowers"" and it is aptly named, with a wonderful abundance of blooms filling the many gardens and parks in the city. Bloemfontein sits high above sea level and being landlocked has no beach like many of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. This in no way detracts from the beauty of the city, which is large, modern, and surprisingly free of litter. It plays home to almost 400 000 residents, has a number of fine educational establishments, and famously hosted several of the matches of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
