Kung Fu is a made up phrase that literally means "skill" and "time". Combining these two words we get to understand the concept of Kung Fu; any skill that is developed over a period of time. It also loosely means "hard word". The general use of the words today refer loosely to any martial art, and in particular, the Chinese Martial Arts. Kung Fu is now the global term used to represent any of the Chinese Martial Arts - traditional or contemporary/modern. Under this umbrella name lies many different styles that cover all aspects of fighting including, but limited to, striking, punching, kicking, wrestling, grappling, throwing, trapping, weapons work, projectiles, fitness, agility, flexibility, conditioning, etc. Today there are many different Kung Fu schools with different styles, teaching methods and understandings. The Shaolin Temple was created and regarding as the "university" of Kung Fu, and collected and documented as many different styles as possible. Luohan is the oldest fighting style of Shaolin Temple with its roots coming from Damo (Bodhidharma), a South Indian holy man that spread his teachings to the East. His knowledge of Yoga and Kalaripayathu, fuelled the creation of what would later become known as Shaolin Kung Fu. As time went on many offshoots from the original style was created. Martial Arts has constantly evolved and adapted to wars and the needs of the given situation(s), but the embryo still remains as Luohan Quan/Chuan.
