Description

The decision to offer the National Certificate Vocational (NCV) programs in South Africa was a significant development in the country's education landscape, aimed at addressing various challenges & enhancing opportunities for technical & vocational education & training (TVET) learners. South Africa's education system has undergone significant reforms since the end of apartheid in 1994. Prior to democratic transition, the education system was characterized by racial segregation & disparities, with limited access to quality education for the majority of the population, especially in historically disadvantaged communities. The post-apartheid government recognized the need to transform the education system to promote equity, access, and quality across all levels of education, including TVET. TVET has been identified as a key component of South Africa's education and skills development strategy to address unemployment, skills shortages, and economic development. In response to these challenges, the South African government, through the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), developed the National Certificate Vocational (NCV) programs. The NCV programs were designed to provide learners with a comprehensive vocational education and training pathway that integrates theory and practical skills relevant to various industries and occupations. The curriculum of NCV programs emphasizes hands-on learning, workplace experience, and the acquisition of industry-relevant skills to prepare learners for employment or further education. Over time, the NCV programs have been expanded to cover a wide range of fields, including engineering, business studies, hospitality, information technology, and agriculture, among others. The NCV qualifications are recognized by employers, industry bodies, and higher education institutions, providing learners with pathways to employment, entrepreneurship, and further education, including entry into universities of technology and other tertiary institutions. In an nutshell, students instead of doing the traditional Grades 10,11 and 12 can do now an NCV (Grades 10,11 and 12) in one of many fields such as IT, HR, Marketing, Administration, Agriculture etc. Students write exams from the Department of Education and certification is issued from the Umalusi Council (national certifications).
